MS Fram blev specialbygget som et ekspeditionsfartøj med en overlegen isklasse, korttegningsværktøjer, en skibsdybdedatabase, udtagelig fremadrettet ekkolod, isbjergssøgelys, et autonomt sporingssystem, et overdimensioneret olieopbevaringssystem til selvforsyning og et fuldt ‘ekspeditionsredskabsdæk’, der svarer til et bil-dæk, der kan rumme 25 køretøjer.
